The Lone Star State takes great pride in its highway beautification wildflower seeding program, initiated by Former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson. Designated the state flower in 1901, the Bluebonnet (Lupinus)germinates in the fall, generally blooming throughout the state between late March and early May.
The Big Bend Bluebonnet, such as these found on Hwy 90 East in Alpine, is the tallest of the three Texas Lupines. Flower stalks on this delicate-looking but hardy plant grow to 3 feet tall, bloom a little earlier and last a bit longer than the 1-2 foot tall Texas Bluebonnet. The Texas Bluebonnet is probably easiest to find in the Hill Country in the Highland Lakes region near Austin.
