JIM’S VIEWS Spring has arrived in Calamity Creek Country when Giant Daggers are in bloom, from March through June. The majestic plants during most of the year are just big yuccas (up to 20 feet tall- yes, we DO grow them big in Texas!) with dangerous needle-like leaf tips. But come spring, the mountains and desert plains are dotted with hundreds of the towering bouquets. The Texas Wildflower Field Guide (1984,University of Texas Press), tells of a particular Giant Dagger flower stalk found in the Dagger Flat area of Big Bend National Park about 100 miles south of Alpine. The stalk weighed 70 pounds and contained 1,000 blossoms. That's BIG! The flowers provide nectar for birds and insects, and the plants are grazed upon by area mammals. Our property at Calamity Creek south of Alpine is foraged regularly by javelinas, and the Giant Dagger leaves are favorite salad toppings.
