The North American Pronghorn once roamed the great Texas plains by the hundreds of thousands, until hunters and increasing settlements eliminated the majority of herds. They can run in speeds up to 60 mph in short bursts. Both bucks and does have antlers. These short, stocky, powerful animals are still hunted in season in the Southwestern United States.
In the vast expanse along US HWY 67 between Presidio and Marfa, small groups of the beautiful Pronghorns are often seen grazing. This one was kind enough to stop at just the right spot with Cathedral Mountain in the background.
